Is “Americanization” Still Possible?

An immigration expert, Mark Krikorian, warns that America’s immigration crisis won’t end until the country’s elites stop rejecting the idea of Americanization.
Krikorian argues that the problem isn’t immigrants themselves—it’s the leadership class. He says government, business, schools, and even churches have made assimilation a “dirty word,” leaving newcomers without a clear path to becoming part of the American identity.
“It’s not the immigrants’ doing,” Krikorian explained. “Our leaders aren’t even sure it’s a good thing to be American anymore.”
He points out that in the past, schools taught children patriotic texts like the Gettysburg Address and songs like Hail Columbia. Today, he claims, many schools teach ambivalence—or even hostility—toward America.
Meanwhile, deportations under President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem have surged past 515,000, but Krikorian insists enforcement alone won’t solve the deeper issue. With nearly 16% of the U.S. population foreign‑born—the highest in history—he believes assimilation is harder than ever, especially with technology allowing immigrants to stay closely tied to their home countries.
His Solution
Krikorian calls for leaders—from the president to schoolteachers—to embrace American identity again. With the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, he sees a chance to reset the narrative and revive pride in becoming American.
